NFL: Jaguars to win ugly against the Titans

Two bad teams face off, but look for Jacksonville to push luckless Tennessee closer to the world record in the NFL

Late in an NFL season, you can be gifted with an exciting clash that sees both teams trying to get into the playoffs, or a real stinker between two teams that have nothing left to play for other than their respective jobs. Unfortunately we have the latter as the Jacksonville Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans. But with no-one safe from being let loose in the New Year and neither wanting to lose to a divisional rival, we might be in for a full-blooded affair.

When both teams are 2-12, there are plenty of reasons why they aren’t very good. Neither can produce on offence. The Jaguars are last in the NFL in points whilst the Titans are 29th. And neither can really play great defence, with Tennessee 31st in points allowed and Jacksonville at 28th.

The difference might be on the defence, the Jags are the best in the league at forced fumbles with 18 and with back-up QB Charlie Whitehurst starting for the Titans, that might just be the big factor in this one. Go for the Jaguars to squeeze out an ugly win at 31/50; they just have the edge and the fact they’ll be the home team.

Since neither team is excellent on either side of the ball, expect this one to be a low-scoring affair. The meeting earlier on this season finished 14-16 to the Titans and this one will be similar, so take the total points to be lower than 40.5 at Evens.

Now here’s a tasty punt: Tennessee are one of only two teams in the NFL to have two safeties in games this season. Since this might not be the best of games, how about having a go at the first scoring play of the game being a safety for the Titans at 100/1. It’d be something a little crazy but if it comes in, it’ll make this game a lot more exciting.
